Early Breast Cancer Detection
Most women are familiar with mammography as our "gold standard"
for breast cancer screening. However, there are additional tools
available that women can add to their arsenal.
One of the most effective tools in breast cancer screening is
breast self-exam (BSE). However, BSE works best when women are
appropriately trained in the procedure, and then followed-up
with annual clinical breast exams (CBE) from their physicians.
In a 2000 University of Toronto study, approximately 20,000
women were ...

CPT Codes; What are you Getting Billed for?
All of us visit some sort of medical office from time to time
and some of us make the visit a routine. No matter how many
times we go in for a checkup or treatment we usually end up
paying a relatively inexpensive co-pay for the services rendered
to us. So who makes up the difference and how do they pay it?
Obviously, the doctors and nurses that we visit are not making a
living off of our co-pay; so how do they obtain the additional
money from our heath care provider? In this article, I will ...

Surgical Hypnosis
When people set aside the usual myths and misconceptions
associated with hypnosis good things usually happen. Recently,
hypnosis has been getting some positive national exposure
increasing the publics general awareness of its health related
benefits and its role as an increasingly popular frontline

One in seven Americans suffered it. Appendicitis. What is it?
It's 10 pm. Severe pain in your belly. You are in ER. Previous
day you had a nice party with your friends. Then pain started
around your umbilicus (navel). You thought first: aha, probably
you ate something bad, it will go away. But it doesn't. You have
vomited once and lost appetite. Pain did not improve but
worsened. After a day of suffering you decided to visit the
hospital. Long taxi trip. Pain is shooting every time the car
bumps into a pot. Nurses ask you bunch of questions and place ...

Additional Treatment for Prostate Cancer May Enhance Improved
Outcomes
A recent article in the Journal of the American Medical
Association showed improved survival in men who underwent a
combination of androgen suppression and radiation therapies. In
the study of 206 men who had localized prostate cancer. This
study is significant because of the shortened time of male
hormone sup- pression. There are numerous side effects with long
term suppression. When compared with radiation alone ...

Peripheral Vascular Care
Peripheral Vascular Care: What is the Emerging Opportunity?
Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) care has become a hot topic in
hospital and medical circles over the past few years. The
attention the topic has been receiving is analogous to the
famous line in the movie, The Graduate when the star was given
advice to go to work in 'plastics' to ensure career success. As
with 'plastics,' PVD care has not taken off as expected. A
number of factors have influenced the development'or lack ...

Peripheral Vascular Care
Cardiovascular care is big business for hospitals. While a lot
of attention and resources are directed to care and treatment of
the coronary arteries, peripheral vascular (PV) care has gained
momentum. Even though the dollars spent on PV care are
significantly less than for cardiac, the patients are the same
and PV care is an essential component of full service
cardiovascular care. Hospitals are researching the needs of
their communities and determining whether they should have a PV
care focus ...

X-Rays - What You Don't See & Feel Can Hurt You
There is little doubt that x-ray technology (x-rays, CT scans,
fluoroscopy) in medicine has done much good and is an invaluable
diagnostic tool. Although I seriously question its usefulness as
a therapeutic tool (e.g. cancer radiation therapy), that will
not be the focus of this article. X-rays are high-energy nuclear
emissions that have the ability to pass right through tissue and
leave an image on a film, called a radiograph (the film itself
is not an "x-ray"). Less emission gets through ...

Let's Start Screening For Breast Health
In the United States, American women are told to begin annual
mammographic screening for breast cancer at the age of 40. Long
before we've reached this age, we are advised to perform a
monthly breast exam and see our doctors for a clinical breast
exam (CBE) annually as well. However, the detection rate of
breast cancer for CBE is only 47% when the tumors are less than
1 centimeter while mammography has given us a 70% detection
rate. By the time a tumor is detected by palpation or ...
